Registrars, Deputy and Assistant Registrars
The Registrar of the Supreme Court is appointed by the Governor General, acting in accordance with the advice of the Judicial and Legal Service Commission and must have been a member of The Bahamas Bar for at least five years or has been qualified for at least five (5) years for admission to practise as a counsel and attorney under the provisions of the Legal Professions Act. Section 65 of the Supreme Court Ac, Ch 53.
Deputy and Assistant Registrars of the Supreme Court are appointed by the Governor-General, acting in accordance with the advice of the Judicial and Legal Service Commission and must be qualified for admission to practise as counsel and attorney under the provisions of the Legal Professions Act. Section 67 of the Supreme Court Act.
The Registrar, Deputy and Assistant Registrars have such jurisdiction, powers and duties as are by the Supreme Court Act or rules of court conferred or imposed upon them. Sections 65 (2) and 67(2) of the Supreme Court Act. The duties of the Registrar are both judicial and administrative.
Order 32 Rule 11 of the Rules of the Supreme Court sets out the judicial jurisdiction, powers and duties of the Registrar and provides that the Registrar (including Deputy and Assistant Registrars) shall have the same powers as a Judge in Chambers in certain matters. Registrars have no judicial jurisdiction in criminal matters.
